BY FRANK FARRAGHER
A 36-years-old mother of three young children was killed instantly yesterday morning after the car she was driving was in collision with a bus on the old Dublin Road.
The accident occurred at around 10.30am when the woman’s car was in collision with a bus travelling towards Galway City on the Coast Road leading to Oranmore – another car was also involved in the collision but the female driver of that vehicle escaped injury.
It is understood that there were about 30 passengers on the bus – one of them was taken to University Hospital Galway as a precautionary measure.
Gardaí, Fire Brigade personnel and ambulances arrived at the scene shortly after the accident occurred – cutting equipment was used to free the woman from the car but she was pronounced dead on arrival to UHG. There were no passengers in the car.
The road was closed for technical examination until around 6pm yesterday with diversions put in place. The dead woman was named locally last night as Dympna Folan (nee Kenny) who was originally from Eyrecourt but living in Mervue.
Gardaí have appealed for any witnesses to the accident to contact them at Galway Garda Station, Mill Street, at (091) 538000.
Meanwhile in a separate accident at Corrandulla on Sunday morning, a 23-years-old woman from the city suffered head injuries after her car went of control and collided with the roadside embankment.
The single vehicle accident occurred at around 3.30am on Sunday in Ballydonnellan on the main Galway to Headford Road – the woman was removed to UHG before later being transferred to Beaumont Hospital, Dublin.
