Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to two separate road collisions in County Galway in the past week.
Gort Gardaí have launched an appeal for witnesses to a fatal road traffic accident which occurred near Kinvara village last Thursday, August 6.
A male cyclist, aged 43, collided with a car and was rushed to University Hospital Galway (UHG).
The man lost his battle for life and died from injuries sustained in the collision in hospital on Saturday. He has been named as Kevin Smith from Tipperary, who was living in Ballvaughan, Co Clare.
The incident occurred in the townland of Ballyclery on the main Kinvara to Ballindereen Road about one kilometre outside the seaside village in South Galway.
Garda Sergeant Pat Fitzmaurice said: “Gort Gardaí are seeking assistance from the public who may have witnessed this accident or are in a position to offer any information in relation to this incident.”
Galway County Councillor Gerry Finnerty (FF) said this fatal accident was the third road collision Gardaí had to deal with along that stretch of road in the past week.
“It is a particularly poor stretch of road – it’s very narrow and winding and is not designed to take the volume of traffic that is on it. A lot of the traffic that Gardaí were diverting after the accident was coaches and buses and it’s just not able for the volumes,” said Cllr Finnerty.
Meanwhile, Gardaí in Ballinasloe have sought witness to a serious road traffic collision last Friday, August 7, in which a man sustained serious injuries.
The incident in which two cars collided occurred at about 9pm on the Ballinasloe to Athlone Road at Kilgarve, Creagh, Ballinasloe.
The 61-years-old male driver of one car was seriously injured, according to Gardaí, and was taken to Portiuncula Hospital. It is understood the local man was later transferred to UHG, where he is understood to be recovering from serious injuries sustained. The 21-years-old male driver of the other car was uninjured in the incident.
