Winter boost as 130 Galway homes get insulation installed free
A total of 130 local authority homes across Galway City are to receive attic and wall insulation free of charge after Galway City Council received €190,000 in funding for the project from the Department of the Environment.
The houses will be selected according to the year of construction, with the oldest being the first to benefit from the scheme, and contractors working on behalf of the City Council are set to visit eligible homes in the next few weeks.
Work will be concentrated in the initial phase on houses in the Shantalla, Claddagh, Henry Street, and Bohermore areas, with a particular focus on homes which were built prior to the 1950s.
“Inspections of the houses are scheduled over the coming weeks in order to establish the extent of the works required and issue a rating,” said Director of Services, Joe O’Neill. “The insulation works will then follow.”
The Mayor of Galway, Padraig Conneely, has welcomed the Department of Environment allocation and said that the improvement works would cover about €1,500 per household.
“The aim of the City Council is to start with the oldest houses first and they are currently listing the oldest they have on their books,” said Mayor Conneely.
He said there was no need for householders to apply for the improvement works, as staff would contact the eligible householders in the coming weeks.
