Motorists are being asked to avoid the Prom in Salthill due to flooding between the aquarium and Grattan Road.

The prom is currently closed between the D’Arcy roundabout at Seapoint to the junction of Father Griffin Road and Dr Colohan Road.

Toft carpark and the carpark on the prom are currently underwater but the water is now receding.

The R336 through Spiddal is badly flooded along the prom, but is passable with extreme care.

Gort Gardaí say there’s a tree down at the entrance to Lough Cutra on the Gort to Ennis road, and council crews are en route.

There’s also a lot of surface water on the N18 between Galway and Gort.

The Coast Road from Oranmore to Galway is badly flooded due to overtopping and motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution.

There is also very high winds on the M6 motorway this morning, and motorists are asked to slow down, especially when approaching the wind barriers near the Coolagh Roundabout near the end of the motorway.

Tuam Gardaí say there’s significant surface water in the Milltown area, and from Dunmore to Tuam.

Meanwhile, Coastal communities along the west and south are bracing themselves for flooding – as Storm Jonas makes its way to Ireland after hitting the US at the weekend.

Rather than snow, the weather system will bring heavy rain.

A flood warning from Met Éireann came into force in the early hours of this morning and applies to counties Wexford, Waterford, Cork, Kerry, Clare, Galway and Mayo.

A Status Yellow wind warning is also in place for the entire country.

The yellow wind and rain warnings for Galway remain in place until mid-afternoon.

Met Eireann Forecaster Deirdre Lowe says the high winds and heavy rain, combined with high tides could cause problems along coasts.
