Will is the way to go!
Galway IFA Chairperson, ANNE MITCHELL, stresses the importance of farmers facing up to the decision of making a Will. Do it in time . . . and into the future it can make life an awful lot easier for you and your family.
IT is important for everyone who owns any assets to make a Will, because if they don’t, and die without a Will being made, the law on intestacy decides what happens to their assets and property.
A Will can ensure that proper arrangements are made for dependants and that property and all other assets – including savings, land and entitlements – are distributed in the way one wishes after death, subject to certain rights of spouses/civil partners and children.
In addition to making a Will, it is also prudent that a person completes the form entitled: “Where my Possessions are Kept” and leave it together with their will or provide their executors with it.
This form provides full information on the person who has made the Will including their name address, date of birth, PPS number, pension claim number, Medical Card number, as well as the name, address and phone number of all the executors, the name of the Will solicitors and their contact details.
Birth/marriage certs; details of insurance policies and private pension policies (if applicable); details of bank accounts/credit union accounts/post office saving account; details of investments and Prize Bonds held; property deeds/ tenancy agreements: log book of car/ jeep/tractor should also be kept with this.
A person may have special wishes regarding their funeral arrangements and burial – there is provision on this form for including these wishes also. Valuable or sentimental items can be included if not already included in the Will.
