THE city is to receive a windfall of €55,000 from the promoters of the Westlife concert which will be staged at Pearse Stadium later this month.

Councillors have insisted that the donation from Absolute Promotions be ringfenced and spent on a specific project in the Salthill area. The donation from the promoters is in addition to the €5,000 it must give the Council for the provision of litter bins and street cleaning.

At last night’s City Council meeting Councillors ‘rubberstamped’ planning permission for the concert which formally gives the go-ahead to up to 35,000 fans to descend on Salthill for the pop sensations’
concert on June 21.

Councillors were told that following negotiations with City Council officials, the promoters had agreed to donate €55,000 to the city. This was the practice in Kilkenny where concert promoters donated money in-kind to the local community as a gesture of goodwill for the inconvenience and disturbance caused to residents.
