ALL of the Connacht counties were represented at Sunday’s national IFA tractor rally in Dublin held to highlight threats posed to the future of farming across the country.

Galway had four out of the 11 Connacht tractors in the event – driven by Noel Murphy, Ballymacward; Bertie Roche, Abbey, Loughrea; Aaron Conroy, Woodford; and Peter Gohery, Eyrecourt.

Connacht IFA Chair, Pat Murphy, took to the bike for the event, covering the 206 kilometre trip from Ardrahan to the Farm Centre in Dublin through the course of Friday and Saturday.

Sunday’s event – which had 100 tractors participating – was addressed by National IFA President, Tim Cullinan, who said the ‘Save Irish Farming Rally’ had sent a strong message to Government that farmers had to be involved in negotiations affecting their future.

“Farm families are genuinely concerned about their future. Equally, there is deep frustration that every policy of this Government, including their proposed National Strategic Plan for the next CAP, is designed to reduce production.

“Farmers are being asked to do more and more for less and they are very conscious of the climate challenge, and they want to play their part. But this Government has no plan. Farmers are being talked at – rather than talked to.

“The Government needs to provide more funding, including a properly-funded Common Agricultural Policy, to ensure that farmers can take on the climate challenge while remaining viable.
