Galway Bay fm newsroom – The West on Track community campaign says the new railway station in Oranmore will help boost commuter numbers into the city, and add passenger numbers on the Galway to Dublin and Galway to Limerick routes.

Transport Minister Leo Varadkar is officially opening the railway station in Gurrane shortly.

The 5 million euros facility opened to the public yesterday, and the journey time from Oranmore to Galway is just 7 minutes.

The original Oranmore station was opened in 1851 but closed in 1963 with the building sold as a private residence.

In a statement, West on Track has welcomed the opening of the new station which is the 144th on the Iarnród Éireann network.

Mayor of County Galway Liam Carroll says Iarnród Éireann needs to make sure the station is seen as an attactive option to passengers.
