West of Ireland skincare experts solve pet peeves
Health, Beauty and Lifestyle with Denise McNamara
Niamh Ryan runs her own hair and beauty salon overlooking the River Moy in Ballina. Bridal makeup artist Charlene Flanagan travelled across the country from her home in Enniscrone for workshops as brand ambassador for several high-profile companies.
When Niamh noticed a succession of clients coming in with blemishes despite a rigorous skincare routine, she questioned whether they were cleaning their makeup brushes. What followed was an admission by almost all that while they had good intentions about sanitising with soap and water they rarely if ever did as it took so long for them to dry.
One survey found there is more bacteria on a dirty makeup brush than on the toilet seat yet 68 per cent of women surveyed said they did not clean their brushes.
Niamh researched products and found none were Irish and all were geared at salons rather than the everyday home user.
Having known Charlene for several years at industry events and on social media where she has a massive following for her makeup tutorials and product recommendations – she has 50,000 followers on Instagram – Niamh approached her about her idea for a business.
“Being in business herself, she knew how lonely it can be to be an entrepreneur so the first person she thought of was me. I was newly married and I was thinking about my future career as a makeup artist. It was weird that Niamh approached me the same week I was having that conversation with my husband about creating my own brand.”
