The Minister for Defence wants to buy one or two extended patrol vessels, for operating in more difficult conditions off the West Coast.

The government has put out a tender to replace up to five naval vessels, in what will be the biggest single investment in defence equipment in the history of the State.

It’s planned to buy at least two new offshore patrol ships of up to ninety metres in length, to replace the LE Roisin and the LE Niamh.
