‘Wegians rue wasted chances

CUP semi finals in rugby can really define the losing team’s season. It will usually be that bridge too far if the inner workings just aren’t up to scratch. Galwegians have done lots of good work in this campaign but when it really mattered they just didn’t have that extra edge and that is why they won’t be in next Saturday’s final.

Shannon may have been the warmest of favourites beforehand but this was certainly a game that the home side left behind. The Limerick men were never dominant and for the majority of the contest Galwegians controlled possession and territory. They just couldn’t find the scores in what was at times a lively but ultimately disappointing encounter.

Niall Ronan’s first half try was taken at ease after a seemingly unstoppable lineout and maul broke up and the flanker had a five metre stroll over the line with no defence in sight. It heralded bad times but for the remainder of that half Galwegians went in search of a response and the visitors rarely threatened.
