‘Wegians fail to pay for their sins

GALWEGIANS recorded an historic first-ever win against Ballymena in the All-Ireland League on Saturday at Crowley Park to regain the Des Dempsey Memorial Cup for the first time in 22 years.

And it was a dramatic win as they held out in a thrilling contest which had everything, going right down to the wire.

The visitors played with a mild breeze advantage in the firsthalf blowing towards the clubhouse end.

But Wegians struck first blood early on with a second minute penalty from out-half Peter Durcan.

However the lead was short-lived, as the Blues conceded a soft try in the fifth minute when a loose midfield pass was intercepted by Ballymena centre Rhys Botha.

And scrum-half David Drake won the race to the South African’s well-judged kick for an opportunist try in the right corner, giving Ballymena a 5-3 lead.

However Wegians responded……….
