Weather takes toll on crowds and betting at Ladies Day
Galway Bay fm newsroom – The adverse and unseasonal weather conditions took their toll on the crowd number and the betting for Ladies Day at Ballybrit.
Just over 27 and a half thousand hardy souls braved the wind and rain yesterday, 9 thousand down on Hurdle Day last year.
As a result of the smaller crowd betting was also well down yesterday with the bookies total of just under 1.3 million down just over 800 thousand euro.
Tote betting of 840 thousand euro was down 120 thousand euro.
Among the celebrities braving the weather were soccer international Stephen Hunt and TV3’s Aisling O’Loughlin.
Champion jockey Katie Walsh cut short her honeymoon in order to compete on Ladies’ Day.
She wed Ross O’Sullivan on July 20 and they returned from their mini break in Barcelona so Katie could compete in Ballybrit.
Today’s 7 race card gets underway at 5.05 and there will be live coverage and analysis of all the races here on Galway Bay fm.
