Galway airport needs more international air connections.

That’s according to the Western Development Commission’s latest policy briefing ‘air access and the western region’.

The Commission says that direct international air access to and from the Western region’s regional airports, needs to be maximised to drive enterprise and tourism.

Nationally, state airports are regarded as the most important air access points, however counties such as Galway, Mayo, Roscommon and Leitrim are more than two hours journey from them.

The airport at Carnmore currently services routes to Dublin, Belfast and the UK, and recently announced plans for a new route to London south-end.

Policy analyst with the western development commission, Deirdre Frost says EU guidelines should now be examined
