WARNING FROM COASTGUARD AS WINDS RISE ALONG WEST COAST

There are reports this teatime of strong gale force winds in all coastal areas

The Coastguard is warning people to avoid exposed areas along the west and north-west of the country

Met Eireann is warning of severe winds, with gusts of up to 130 kilometres an hour, in the west and northwest.

Gale force winds have been building since the early afternoon, and people are being warned to avoid exposed coastal areas as strong winds and big waves could be dangerous.

Winds will be strongest after dark this evening along parts of the west coast, winds reaching storm force 10 at times later on coasts from Slyne Head to Erris Head to Malin Head.

However the winds will decrease overnight.
