Warm reception for Douglas Kennedy in Eyre Square
Galway Bay fm newsroom – The youngest son of the late United States Senator, Robert Kennedy, says he will definitely return to Galway.
Douglas Kennedy and his family were welcomed to the city with a special ceremony at Kennedy Park in Eyre Square this afternoon.
The visit marks the 50th anniversary of his uncle, John F Kennedy’s visit to the city in 1963.
After the Eyre Square ceremony the Kennedy party walked through the city down to Tí Cóilí on Mainguard Street for an Irish coffee reception and later visited the City Museum
Hundreds of people gathered in the June sunshine this afternoon in Eyre Square to catch a glimpse of a Kennedy.
Douglas Kennedy, his wife Molly and childred, Riley, Rowan, Mickey, George and Boru accompanied him to the plinth where a bust of JFK is displayed.
In her speech, Mayor Terry O’ Flaherty, who was carrying out her last act in office, fondly remembered Douglas’ uncle John visiting 50 years ago:
