GALWAY city traffic wardens stepped up their efforts to nab careless parkers last year, doubling the number of tickets issued in the space of twelve months.

New figures reveal that 16,184 tickets were issued to drivers who had parked illegally in the city in 2007 — almost double the number issued the previous year. The massive increase in fines is largely down to Galway City Council’s new approach of using the fines as a “traffic management tool” in order to help alleviate the city’s traffic problems.

“The traffic issues that we have in the city mean that greater focus is being placed on any traffic management tools that we can use, and enforcing parking fines is one of those tools,” a Council spokesperson said.

Two extra community wardens were brought on board in the city in 2007, increasing the total number of wardens to eleven.
