Walsh’s future as Galway senior football manager still to be discussed

It will be the end of the month before it will be known if Galway senior football boss Kevin Walsh continues on in his current role with both he and the Galway GAA Executive yet to meet to finalise details for 2019.

While it is expected that Walsh will be at the helm for a fifth season when the FBD League resumes in January, particularly given the superb progress made under his stewardship this year, the Killannin man and the Board have yet to publicly confirm their intentions.

Under Walsh in 2018, the Tribesmen made their first National League final appearance in 12 years, winning six of their seven group games and drawing the other with Dublin at Pearse Stadium. This included victories over Tyrone, Donegal, Mayo, Kerry, Monaghan and Kildare, with their wins over Donegal and Kerry away particularly impressive.

They subsequently lost out to Dublin in the National League decider on a 0-18 to 0-14 scoreline and it was the recently crowned All-Ireland champions that once again put paid to the Connacht champions’ interest in the All-Ireland series when they met at the semi-final stage in August.

However, wins over Mayo, Sligo and Roscommon saw Galway capture a 46th Connacht title under Walsh – drawing level with Mayo in the roll of honour – while it also secured a coveted place in the newly formatted Super 8s series where, despite a disappointing loss to Monaghan, they defeated Kerry and Kildare to reach a first All-Ireland semi-final since 2001.

It may well be a ‘fait accompli’ that Walsh does continue but given there has already been a significant change in Walsh’s backroom team with the appointment of coach Paddy Tally as Down manager, it was expected Galway GAA would move quickly to endorse Walsh’s tenure for 2019.
