STEPHEN Walsh might be reluctant to have any kind of interaction with the media, but the city native certainly hasn’t been shy in front of goal this season, and the long-serving United man moved joint top of the First Division scoring charts on Friday night to set the home side on their way to a fully deserved win.

Walsh’s eighth minute strike was his fifth league goal of the season and saw United take immediate control of the game, but they had to wait until David Hurley’s 70th minute penalty to seal a win which sees them keep pace with Cork City at the top of the table ahead of a crunch double-header this May Bank Holiday weekend when they face Treaty United away on Friday (7.45pm), and Longford Town at home on Monday (5pm).

“The first half we were very good, we played well and passed the ball,” United manager, John Caulfield, said after the game.

“[Bray goalkeeper] Stephen McGuinness, he made three really good saves, and we had another header just past the post – we created a good few chances and we looked good.

“The second half, they threw caution to the wind and pegged us back, we had to defend a bit for long spells, we didn’t control the game as much but obviously we got the penalty and the second goal.

“The game was over then but there was a spell there for about 20 minutes when we didn’t control the game like we should have. As I keep saying, there is still a lot of work to do but to be fair to the lads, they worked hard, we won 2-0 and have to be happy with that,” he said.

He made just one change to the side that give a sumptuous performance the previous week in the 1-0 win away to Waterford, and it was an enforced one, with Mikie Rowe missing out after picking up an ankle injury in the RSC, Ed McCarthy coming back into the side in his place.
