Walls Talk – evoking other times via dance and song

Breandán de Gallaí grew up in the Donegal Gaeltacht listening to jazz and blues and learning Irish dance, He credits his upbringing with his holistic approach to the arts.

Arts Week with Judy Murphy

Choreographer and dancer Breandán de Gallaí was mesmerised when he first heard Gina Boreham singing. It was in his homeplace of Gaoth Dobhair, County Donegal, at an after-show party for the premiere of a production by his company Ériu.

English-born Gina who was there to see friends who were performing in the piece, seemed  quiet and reserved.

Then she started singing and turned into “someone who blew the room away. I knew I had to do something with this woman”, he recalls.

The result is a new show, Walls Talk, which comes Galway’s Town Hall Theatre on Tuesday, March 15, as part of a 10-venue national tour.

Walls Talk features Gina singing 10 songs from the golden era of jazz and blues while Breandán dances and also presents short extracts from The Playboy of the Western World and Philadelphia, Here I Come, as well as his own words, tré Gaeilge, which draw on memories of his youth and working in the bog.

Walls Talk evokes the human experience, happy, sad and traumatic, and aims to capture how humans have more in common than anything that makes us different to each other.

There are also objects on stage – everyday items which will provoke memories.

Walls Talk was inspired by several things, including Gina’s amazing voice, Breandán explains.
