Wait for first league win is over as Utd wallop Athlone
Athlone Town 1
Galway United 4
JOHN Caulfield’s first league game in charge of Galway United ended with a first league win of the season thanks to a dominant display against Athlone Town on Friday night.
United were very impressive from the first whistle, a completely different story to when the sides met in the league in Eamonn Deacy Park just over a month ago, when they huffed and puffed and twice had to come from behind to salvage a draw.
They were never in danger of dropping points on Friday night, especially when two key first-half incidents went their way, with the awarding of a cushion-soft penalty in the 19th minute, followed by a brain-fart by Athlone Town’s Lee Duffy 15 minutes later which resulted in his dismissal.
Caulfield made four changes to the side that had been beaten by Shelbourne in the FAI Cup the previous week, with Kevin Horgan, Marc Ludden, Conor Barry and Stephen Christopher all coming into the side.
Barry had a hand in creating the opener, lifting a ball over the top for Enda Curran in the 19th minute. As Curran waited for the ball to drop, Ciaran Grogan moved in to challenge, and Curran hit the deck, the kind of a penalty you’d demand if it was going for you, but would be furious about if it was awarded against you.
