Wagner on song at Eye Cinema

New York’s Met Opera returns to the Eye Cinema this Saturday, October 31, with Richard Wagner’s early masterpiece Tannhäuser, as the Met in HD season continues worldwide.

The screening of Tannhäuser will be the first time ever for this opera to be broadcast live from the Met and the first time in over a decade that it has been performed on the Met’s New York stage.

Set in the rural landscapes and castles of medieval Germany, and with a cast of characters that includes knights, goddesses, nymphs, pilgrims, and beautiful maidens, this story is one that explores the conflict between flesh and spirit, examining what happens when erotic love is in conflict with prudish society.

Taking the mediaeval Tannhäuser legend as a model, Wagner also questions the place of the artist in a society bound by constraints.

This is regarded as one of Wagner’s more accessible works and the Met’s traditionally staged production of a work that preoccupied the composer until his death offers all the ingredients for an evening of classic opera.

Patrons are asked to note the earlier start time of 4pm for this live screening.
