VOTER TURNOUT STEADY ACROSS GALWAY

Polling is said to be steady across Galway in the local and European elections, to fill 72 local authority seats and three European seats.

In Galway city the electorate is approximately 45 thousand, while in the county the electorate is approximately 130 thousand.

In the city the turnout is low at approximately 8 per cent, but this is traditional with the biggest surge normally seen after work hours.

Voting in rural areas has been low so far, however larger towns in East Galway have recorded turnouts of as high as 18 percent so far.

In Tuam and North Galway the average turnout is 15 per cent.
