Date Published: 07-Nov-2012

Galway Volvo Ocean Race stakeholders are to meet with local Oireachtas TDs this evening.

It’s to discuss a range of issues including outstanding bills and obligations from the summer race finale and the possibility of supports for a future bid for 2016.

Last month, “Let’s Do It Global”, the organisers of the two previous events, said a decision to proceed with a Galway bid for the next Volvo Ocean race has simply been postponed and not ruled out completely.

It was agreed that if at all possible, obligations from the 2012 event must be honoured before Galway or Ireland can move forward.

The decision date for tenders is December 7th.

A group of stakeholders including “Let’s Do It Global” are to meet with Galway TDs this evening.

The funding required to settle outstanding bills of around 300 thousand euro from the last event and other obligations are among the items up for discussion.

Funding support to facilitate a bid for the 2016 race will also be debated.

The stakeholders currently involved in regular meetings on the race and its future in the city include Galway City and County Councils, Galway Harbour Company and Galway Chamber of Commerce.
