Volvo Race backers quash ‘move to Cork’ rumours

THE Chairman of Let’s Do it Galway has moved to quash rumours that Galway may lose out on hosting the Volvo Ocean Race and that an eleventh hour decision may be taken to pass the massive event over to Cork.
Addressing a meeting of Galway City Council last night, John Killeen said he was aware there were rumours circulating that there was a problem with preparations for the sailing spectacle, but said he wanted to assure councillors this was not the case.
“There are many rumours around that the event is going to Cork – that is not the case. It is being said also that no boats will come into Galway – that is not the case,” Mr Killeen said.
He did however admit there were “challenges” which stillhad to be addressed – including
ongoing negotiations with both Topaz and Chevron Ireland in relation to the continued presence of a number of massive oil tanks on the docks, which were due to be removed some months ago.
“Progress is in hand on that issue and I understand the new tanks are being tested at the moment to allow for the oil to be moved. I am certainly confident that the tanks will be gone by the time the boats come along. It is in progress and everyone knows the deadline we have to meet.”
