Date Published: 22-May-2008
THE organisers of the Galway Stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race which arrives in the city next year are hoping it will be such a success that Galway will again be chosen as a stopover destination for the next race in 2012.
Exactly one year before its arrival in the city next May, the Galway leg of the race was officially launched yesterday where details of what will be the biggest sporting event and festival in Ireland in 2009 were unveiled.
The event, which is expected to generate €43 million for the local economy and attract up to 140,000 visitors during its two week stay in Galway, is not just for sporting enthusiasts and will be promoted as a festival with side events – including a ‘major headline musical act – that can enjoyed by thousands who have no interest in sport.
“This will be a spectacular event and the in-port racing will be viewed from along the Promenade in Salthill while private boats will be able to go out and see the racing yachts up close.
“It’s going to be a festival and we want to include everybody even those who are not particularly interested in sailing,” said Debbie Hadwen, a Volvo Representative at yesterday’s press conference in the Radisson Hotel.
