Volume of sites on Derelict Register in Galway City ‘to go through roof’

From this week’s Galway City Tribune – A five-fold increase in the number of Galway’s derelict sites is on the cards unless owners stop neglecting their land and property.

There are currently 10 sites on the official derelict sites public register in the city, but the local authority has identified a further 50 sites that are on the verge of being declared derelict.

Galway City Council said these 50 sites “required works to be completed to avoid being placed onto the register”.

“These locations are currently under review and notices if required will be issued to the relevant owners”, according to a spokesperson in the Council’s Environment Department.

“Galway City Council will work with the property owners to ensure any issues are rectified to render the property non derelict,” the spokesperson continued.

Locations are placed on the Derelict Site list, “post non-compliance by the relevant owner”.

The Council did not divulge to the Galway City Tribune the locations of the sites that have been earmarked as requiring improvement to avoid being put on the register.

The existing derelict sites are located across the city, including Renmore, the Tuam Road, Salthill, Knocknacarra and city centre.
