MAREE’S two Super League sides bounced back from the disappointment of their respective cup exits with two big victories over the weekend; but Moycullen suffered a 26-point Super League defeat away to a Tralee Warriors side that has moved to the top of the table following their victory.

In juvenile basketball, three Galway sides were in action in the U-18 boys and U-18 girls National Cup, with Titans’ boys’ side making it to the Pool 2 final, losing out to UCD Marian.

A stunning final quarter performance from Maree saw them take the scalp of Waterford Wildcats on their home court to move to second in the Women’s Super League table.

The Oranmore-based side led by two points at the end of the first quarter, but trailed by three both at half-time and the end of the third quarter, only for them to dig deep and claim the win in a physical encounter.

Wildcats enjoyed early 4-point leads, only for Fiona Scally and Claire Rockall to twice drag Maree level, before the visitors finally got their noses in front, thanks in no small part to two 3-pointers from Galway ladies football star, Aine McDonagh.

Carly McLendon and Carol McCarthy also got on the scoresheet in the first quarter, meaning all five of Maree’s starters had knocked down a basket in the opening 10 minutes as they led 24-22 at the end of the quarter.

Wildcats took control early in the second to wipe out that deficit and take a six-point lead, and after a brief Maree rally, the home side extended the gap to eight points before a strong Maree finish, thanks to scores from Scally and McDonagh, had the gap back to 3 (45-42) at half-time.
