Victory for Galway pair in Blessington

LAST weekend saw the rowing action for the season move to Blessington, Co. Wicklow, for the annual Metropolitan Regatta. With many of this year’s races cancelled due to bad weather, including Cork Regatta at the National Rowing Centre last week, it was important that the event ran smoothly.

With the sun shining, it was set up for ideal rowing conditions. Due to exams, only the Seniors from Galway Rowing Club were available to travel.

John Forde and Marc Stephens competed in the Mens Senior pair event, eager to build on their Ghent success and 2nd place in Cork in atrocious conditions last week.

They rowed well in their heat, winning it by two lengths to set up a tough final against two Trinity crews, Commercial Dublin, Belfast and a Neptune/ St Michaels composite, containing John Forde’s cousin. The Galway pair had a clean fast start, edging out to a length lead early on, and ………
