The Vice President of the Garda representative association says there is no real cost benefit in closing 10 Galway Garda stations.

Dermot O’ Brien says guards will now have further distances to travel to deal with issues such as public order offences and to execute warrants and summonses.

The Sunday Independent is reporting that the 100 Garda station closures announced last year are expected to take place this month.

It had been expected they would take place on aphased basis throughout the year.

The ten Galway Garda stations to close are Kiltullagh, Tynagh, Kilchreest, New Inn, Kilconly, Menlough, Kilcolgan, Shanaglish, Ballymoe, and Leenane.

Vice President of the GRA and Tuam Garda Dermot O’ Brien says the closure of these stations will mean the demise of the link between Gardaí and the rural community
