Variety at heart of NUIG Virtual Summer Festival
Arts Week with Judy Murphy
“Theatre, visual art, music, film, gaming, and social events for all age groups and interests,” are on the programme for NUIG’s first Virtual Summer Festival, running from August 26-29.
NUI Galway’s Societies Office is partnering with local artists and creators for the four-day online event, explains Festival Director and Societies Officer Riona Hughes
The event will include a number of theatre performances including the Irish Student Drama Association (ISDA) Awards which will be hosted online. This will allow viewers to see Ireland’s top student productions as they compete for the coveted Irish Student Drama Awards. There are 12 performances, 10 of which are original works, and they will be screened twice each during the festival. The Awards ceremony will be streamed live on Saturday, August 29, at 9.30pm.
Other plays during the four days will include WikiLeaks on Trial by Hot Potato Productions; Interactive children’s theatre from Beluga Theatre Company; Luna, a choose-your-own-ending adventure by Dramsoc; and two radio dramas – Delia and Michael Davitt: Our Land from Iaro Productions, both by Kinvara playwright Gerry Conneely.
Musical highlights will include a tribute to the late singer Mary McPartlan of the University’s Arts in Action Programme, who died in March. This will feature her fellow musicians and friends alongside an animated photo essay, highlighting her life and her enormous contribution to the arts in Galway, Ireland and internationally.
