Utd on cloud nine as they run riot against league newcomers
Galway United 9
Kerry FC 1
History was made in Eamonn Deacy Park last Friday night as Galway United scored nine goals in a game for the first time ever as they handed a hopelessly naïve Kerry FC side with the mother and father of all beatings.
The visitors were incredible 22/1 outsiders with some bookmakers on the day of the game, and the odd-setters got this one bang on the money as United ran riot against the league newcomers to send out a real statement of intent to anyone who fancies challenging them for the title this season.
United’s starting XI showed one change to the side which beat Waterford a week earlier, switching to a somewhat ‘old school’ 4-4-2 formation, bringing in the pace of Francely Lomboto alongside Stephen Walsh up front, with David Hurley moving to the bench, and it was a move which worked a treat.
With Ronan Manning and Ed McCarthy hugging the touchlines, and Lomboto sprinting his way through the middled, Kerry’s defenders didn’t know what hit them as United tore into them from the very first whistle.
The visitors didn’t help their own cause, committing players forward when the game was long gone, which left huge gaps at the back; and their defensive line is in serious need of a spirit level before their next game, as some players stepped up with others dropping back, which created even more pockets of space for United to race into.
There is a temptation to have some sympathy for Billy Dennehy’s side, but you also have to be impressed at the ruthlessness United showed in going hunting for more goals in the second-half, despite leading 5-0 at the break.
