Up to 50 new manufacturing jobs are to be created in the city over the next four years after a US multinational opened up its first facility in Ireland.
The Metal Improvement Company, based in Texas, is a world leader in surface treatments and high technology coatings.
There will be 20 technical and manufacturing jobs created immediately at the factory in the Parkmore business centre. By 2015, there will be between 20 and 30 more staff recruited for the operation.
The company, a subsidiary of the Curtiss-Wright Corporation, is investing €1.4m in setting up the parylene coatings unit for the medical device, electronics and aerospace markets.
“This is great for the region, particularly as these are manufacturing jobs and there’s been a lot of coverage over the past few years that the manufacturing industry has been in decline,” a spokeswoman for the IDA said.
“Galway was the chosen location due to the medical devices cluster and the availability of an educated workforce and the location of a major university.”
