The US Ambassador to Ireland will honour a famous Galway emigrant in the village of Taughmaconnell tomorrow.

Dan Rooney will unveil a bronze bust to Taughmaconnell native John G. Downey, who in 1860 became the first non-American Governor of California

A ceremony will take place at noon tomorrow, attended by the US Ambassador and Minister for Housing and Social Services Michael Finneran.

The current Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger was invited to the event as he’s the second non-American elected to the office.

As he’s unable to attend, a letter from Governor Schwarzenegger will be read out at the ceremony.
