‘Unspoilt’ Aran are top Islands

The Aran Islands are the only Irish islands on a worldwide list which industry experts agree have a future in sustainable tourism.

The islands are ranked eleventh, after Molokai Island in Hawaii, on a list of 111 islands, topped by the Faroe Islands.

Bottom of the list is the American island of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands and the Spanish resort of Ibiza.

The list was compiled by environmental and ecology experts for National Geographic Traveller, taking into account how tourism was destroying certain destinations – mainly those with sandy beaches and developed resorts.
