United will need to adapt game for trip to tightest pitch in the league

Galway United face a potential banana skin this evening when they make the long trek south to take on Cobh Ramblers at St Colman’s Park (7.45pm).

Despite sitting just one place off the foot of the table, the island side has found a bit of form of late, claiming a point away to Bray Wanderers last Friday; while only losing by the odd goal in five at home to league leaders, Cork City, the previous week.

John Caulfield noted this week that the St Colman’s Park boasted the “smallest pitch in the league in a tight ground”, and he knows that his side need to be completely focused from the first whistle if they are to claim the win that, let’s be honest, is expected of them.

“The attitude of the lads has been good, but you must keep your feet on the ground. Cork got out of jail there last week – every week is a different challenge, it’s a new game, we go down there and you have to earn the right to win a match,” he said.

United took the three points from the sides’ meeting in Eamonn Deacy Park back in when Killian Brouder snuck in at the back post to force home a Stephen Walsh header in a game in which United made hard work of things.

That was during a period when United appeared to hit a bit of a blip after a decent start to the season, the win coming a week after a poor display and a 2-1 defeat away to Longford Town, and a week before a struggling 1-1 draw at home to Wexford FC.

The Tribesmen came through that testing run of form by responding in style, ticking off four wins on the spin, including two last weekend that were very different from each other.
