THE man Galway United manager John Caulfield referred to as ‘Mr Galway United’ came off the bench to rescue a point for the home side in a topsy-turvy game on Friday night.

Stephen Walsh scored United’s 1,000th competitive goal last season, but his 76th minute strike on Friday night is arguably of more significance as it prevented United falling six points behind the title favourites after just a couple of games.

United were wretched in the opening half, but whatever was said at half-time did the trick as they were a side transformed on the resumption. Both Caulfield and Ed McCarthy insisted after the game very little was, in fact, said at the break, despite United being 2-0 down and being unable to string more than a couple of passes together.

They were a very different beast in the second-half, with Jordan Adeyomo giving them massive momentum when scoring on his home debut four minutes after the restart; and in the end, the visitors had goalkeeper Barry Murphy to thank for escaping with a point.

United made just one change to the side that got off to a winning start the previous week, and it was an enforced one, with Adeyomo coming in for Wilson Waweru, who was forced to watch from the stands after his sending off in Turners Cross.

The visitors were unchanged from the side that made it two wins from two the previous weekend, and they started the game like league leaders, putting United under pressure from the first whistle as the home side struggled to get beyond 25 yards of their own goal-line.
