United squander a winning hand

GALWAY United ended a three match losing run in Terryland Park on Friday night, but it was a case of two points dropped against basement club Drogheda United as United slipped to sixth in the league as a shock 3-1 win over champions Bohemians saw St Patrick’s Athletic – managed by former United boss Jeff Kenna – move above United in the table for the first time this season.

United started well on Friday, Vinny Faherty firing them into a sixth minute lead, and the early stages suggested the home side were returning to their early season form as they passed the ball well and dominated a game but limited Drogheda side.

However, the game turned on two points, a missed first half penalty and the substitution of Michael McGrath in the second half, and in the end Drogheda were full value for their point after dominating the second half as United failed to come out after the half-time cup of tea.

United got off to the best possible start in the sixth minute when McGrath’s through ball gave Faherty something to chase after deflecting off a defender into his path. He had Conor Kenna for company, and the defender had about a yard head start on him, but Faherty muscled his way onto the ball, and as Paul Skinner came of his line, Faherty stuck out a foot and poked the ball past the ‘keeper.
