United’s off-field issues must be side-lined

Galway United must put off-the-field issues behind them tonight when they travel to Dublin to take on St Patrick’s Athletic in Richmond Park (kick-off 7.45pm) as the league enters the second half of the season.

It was revealed in the Connacht Tribune yesterday that three Manchester businessmenare set to mount a takeover bid for cash-strapped United, and while no figures have yet been mentioned, it is believed a significant six figure sum would need to be involved in order to clear the club’s debts – believed to be in the region of €500,000 – and to put some kind of working capital in place.

Speaking to Tribune Sport yesterday, United manager Ian Foster said he was unaware of any details involved in the proposed takeover, saying his only concern this weekend was to see United return to winning ways.

“It affects me in one way as there are potential new owners of the club, but I don’t know anything about any proposed deal. All I am concentrating on is picking up points quickly, and we have the opportunity to do that on Friday night,” Foster said.

United opened their 2009 league campaign with a stunning 3-0 win over Pats at Inchicore in March, and they also defeated the Dubliners – managed by Jeff Kenna, who walked out on United before
the start of the season despite making a verbal agreement to stay with the club – 2-1 in Terryland in May.
