United’s late joy – for once
Date Published: 17-Jul-2007
HAVING been caught by late sucker punches so often this season, Galway United came off the ropes to land a late blow of their own in the Showgrounds on Saturday night to nick a point their character and attitude fully deserved.
A goal down just short of the hour mark, having been second best for a decent chunk of the contest, United dug deep and were rewarded thanks to yet another strike by Derek Glynn, who struck for his sixth league goal in five outings in the 85th minute.
United’s season has been somewhat unconventional in that it is their away form that has seen the greatest reward, and Saturday’s return was the 12th of their 16 points to come from their trips on the road.
“We’ve picked up 12 points away from home. If you stick another 12 on that (from home games), we’d be flying it, we’d be up in sixth, so it is vitally important we get that first home win,” Cousins says.
The key to that could be the reaction from the fans in the stand — there is no doubt the support given by the knot of United supporters on Saturday night played a part in the visitors grabbing that late equaliser, and if that attitude could be brought into Terryland, and extended throughout the ground, the players will respond.
