United put in the hard yards for away tie with Cabinteely
GALWAY United head for the rugby heartlands of Dublin this Friday looking for a repeat result from their last scheduled visit to Stradbrook Road for a meeting with Cabinteely (7.45pm).
That first game back in March never went ahead, the home side pulling the plug on the match just a couple of hours before kick-off due to issues with Covid-19 in their squad. United were eventually awarded a 3-0 win for the game, which didn’t go down well with Pat Devlin and crew, but United also got a win on the pitch when the sides met in Eamonn Deacy Park in June, Wilson Waweru bagging the only goal of the game.
United had a weekend off from competitive action last weekend, as the FAI Cup took centre-stage, but head coach Lisa Fallon says that far form being a weekend off, it gave the camp an opportunity to put in some additional hard work on the training ground.
“Contrary to what people might think, not having a competitive game did not mean it was an easy week for us, quite the opposite in fact. It meant we could do some extra work with the players, work that you would not necessarily get done in the flow of a game week, so we made the most of that extra time,” she says.
That additional work was needed, with United’s last competitive outing ending in a 1-0 defeat away to Athlone Town. Heading into that game with the Midlands side, United were high on confidence, having ended Shelbourne’s unbeaten start to the season the previous week.
That opened up a title race which looked done and dusted, but United failed to carry that level of display into the game with Athlone, and while Shels wobbled again, dropping two points at home to Bray Wanderers, United were not able to take advantage, possibly blowing their chance of the title.
