United open new season with a bang

GALWAY United were in seventh heaven at the home of the Saints on Friday night as a stunning display saw them record their best ever result at Richmond Park to open their 2009 league campaign in perfect fashion.

It took United 10 games to amass three points last season – it took them just 52 minutes to hit that mark on Friday as they out-passed, out-played and out-fought a woefully inept St Patrick’s Athletic to proudly sit on top of the Premier Division for the first time in 12 long – and often painful – years.

No one will be getting carried away just yet – the season is just one game old, after all, and if they fail to capitalise on it by beating Dundalk in Terryland Park this Friday night then some of the gloss will be taken off the result – but the United players and in particular the fans will knock great mileage out of getting one over on their former manager.

Jeff Kenna walked out on United to take over at Ireland’s so-called ‘Stadium of Light’ in January, but all his talk of challenging for trophies was plunged into darkness after a mesmeric performance from United.
