United must increase goal threat for tough away test against Waterford
GALWAY United’s best attacking football came in the second-half of a 2-2 draw with Waterford FC at Eamonn Deacy Park back in early March, and John Caulfield’s side will need to reproduce that kind of form, but this time over 90 minutes, as they head to the Deise county on Friday night for a first league game at the RSC since 2014 (7.45pm).
United found themselves 2-0 down at half-time in that March meeting, unable to live with the pace of Phoenix Patterson or the guile of Junior Quiturna. However, they were a side transformed in the second-half, Jordan Adeyomo heading them back into the game in the 49th minute when converting his side’s first effort on target in the game.
Stephen Walsh then announced himself as the star striker he has become with the equaliser in the 76th minute, and United could have nicked the win in the end, only for Brian Murphy to get down low and push away Dave Hurley’s 88th minute effort that was destined for the bottom corner.
The Tribesmen will certainly need to find better form than what they have shown in recent outings, with last weekend’s lifeless draw at home to Wexford following in the footsteps of underwhelming performances against Cobh Ramblers (1-0 win), Longford Town (2-1 loss), and Athlone Town (2-1 win).
Wexford, Cobh and Athlone are the bottom three in the table, and any side harbouring serious ambitions of the title needs to be putting them away with more ease than United managed – a week after United struggled to that win over Cobh, Waterford were putting four past the Cork side, and on their own patch as well.
