ON a night when Galway United bid adieu to Newcastle bound Alex Murphy with a standing ovation, the home side maintained their Airtricity League of Ireland First Division challenge with a comfortable success over a willing Cobh Ramblers outfit who were competitive without ever really offering a threat at Eamonn Deacy Park on Friday night.

As ever, Stephen Walsh was amongst the goals as he made it 12 for the season with a brace, while new signing Rob Manley marked his debut with a headed goal from close range. The striker signed from Bray Wanderers during the week also made a significant contribution in open play as he also set up Walsh’s second and, indeed, could have had a few more himself.

The occasion also saw the introduction of two other debutants, as James Finnerty looked an accomplished performer in central defence where he stepped in for the injured Killian Brouder, while Mark Russell made a late cameo for Alex Murphy as the young Currandulla native came off in the closing stages.

Indeed, the 18-year-old was by far the most popular person in Terryland for he was still trying to escape the Dyke Road venue an hour after the game was over as autograph hunters and those chasing photos slowed the exit of the talented teeneger.

With leaders Cork City not in action over the weekend, this was an opportunity to close the gap at the top of the table to a point and against second from bottom Cobh Ramblers, they could not affort to slip up. United were certainly on their game from the off.
