United go top after seventh consecutive league victory

GALWAY United are in nosebleed territory after a seventh successive win saw them climb to the top of the First Division table on a night when Cork City were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Wexford.
United were unchanged from the side that tore Wexford FC to shreds the previous week, but while they started that game on the front foot with positivity and aggression, they were positively lethargic in the early stages last Friday night.
The new league leaders struggled against the basement side in the opening half – there were times, especially in the first 15 minutes when it looked as if it was the men in the black and blue vertical stripes who were the ones chasing promotion.
The visitors were afforded for too much time and space on the ball as United offered very little by way of urgency or pressing, but they sparked into action from the first whistle of the second-half, and in the end ran out comfortable and worthy winners.
