United braced for heated contest with a Cabinteely team not lacking motivation
AN undercurrent of bitterness that has been brewing since the end of last season will finally make it to the pitch this Friday when Galway United host Cabinteely at Eamonn Deacy Park (7.45pm).
That bitterness, it must be said, has been all on the side of the Dublin outfit, whose nose was put out of joint when they were replaced by United in the play-offs last season after having a win that was awarded to them for a game against Wexford overturned after a successful appeal by the south-east club.
Then, to add fuel to the firepit – much like a few rugby-playing South Africans at a stag in Munster – United were handed a 3-0 win for the scheduled meeting between the sides back in April after the Dublin club had to cancel the game due to Covid-19.
So, there is a growing rivalry between the sides that has its roots in the most unusual of circumstances, but all that needs to be put aside as two sides battling to be involved in the play-off spots lock horns on the Dyke Road.
United come into the game two points behind their visitors, and have yet to hit anything resembling the kind of form that brought them to the play-offs last season, but John Caulfield and company will hope for a fillip from last Friday night’s late-late show against Athlone Town.
“It was brilliant to get the win, we were certainly on the front foot in the second-half and we played very well.
