GALWAY United’s five match unbeaten run came to an end on Friday night in Dublin as Shamrock Rover’s striker Andy Myler heaped misery on the visitors with a fine hat-trick.

The Hoops dominated throughout but some good defending from United in the first half ensured the home team’s strikers had a fairly frustrating opening 43 minutes.

Rovers’ patience paid off just before the interval, however, when a lapse of concentration in United’s defence saw Myler control a corner kick on his chest and he duly dispatched a rising half volley to the roof of the net from 15 yards.

Galway’s early contribution saw Lester’s free-kick hit the wall and an audacious overhead kick was straight at ‘keeper Murphy. It was a rare excursion by the visitors into the home side’s danger area as Galway’s strikers were living off scraps for most of the match with Rover’s Sheils and O’Connor dominating the midfield area and dictating the pace of the game.
