'Eye Want Fish Dinner' by Mia Farrell, will be in show at the KAVA Gallery. Right: As will Ceramic Hand by Alannah Slattery.

Uathúlacht (Uniqueness), an exhibition by fifth and sixth year art students of Seamount College in Kinvara, will go on display in the KAVA Courthouse Gallery later this  month.

Under the supervision of their art teacher, and KAVA member, Patrick Kenneally, the students will take responsibility for all aspects of running the exhibition.

The KAVA gallery is located close to Seamount and students say this proximity has allowed them to visit several exhibitions throughout the school year, which has been crucial for their art appreciation course and the development of their own practice.

Their exhibition will feature a wide range of work, including painting, printmaking and sculpture from the students. They have full control over their individual pieces and they are also required to collaborate with each other in the organisation, layout and invigilation of the exhibition.

“It is a unique opportunity to be presented with the chance to exhibit our work in a space where we have previously observed artworks of established artists,”  they say, describing it as a “very interactive way to engage with the senior cycle art syllabus”.

The teenagers are delighted with the experience of being able “to push out of our creative comfort zone and explore a different artistic setting”, by showing in the KAVA space.

“We have learned the value of organisational skills, of consideration needed regarding display and production and, of course, being able to curate our works is an invaluable tool,” they say.

“In preparing for the exhibition we have had to consider what message we are presenting to the viewer – something many of us have never had the chance to do, especially over the last two years and additionally because we are just setting out on our artistic explorations!”
