Union says secondary teachers won’t accept redundancies

Teachers in 4 Galway schools could lose their jobs if they are not signed up to the Haddington Road pay deal.
Under the agreement the government says teachers will be protected from losing their jobs if schools are found to be above the 1 to 28 pupil-teacher ratio – promising to relocate staff from schools who are over quotas.
Members of the ASTI are currently not protected by the provisions of the deal.
Coláiste Chroí Mhuire in Spiddal and St. Jarlath’s College Tuam, could lose one teacher each, Mercy College Woodford could lose up to two teachers, while Dunmore Community School could lose 3 teachers.
The 17-thousand ASTI members will be balloted again on the agreement today and tomorrow with results expected in the next fortnight.
Pat King of the ASTI has warned his members won’t accept compulsory redundancies.
Junior Minister at the Department of Education, Ciaran Cannon, says ASTI members may lose their posts because they’re not signed up to the Haddington Road deal.
