Uni Galway rocked as Kiely runs riot
University of Limerick 4-19
University of Galway 1-13
Mikey Kiely picked the pockets of University of Galway (then NUIG) last year when his late goal sealed the Fitzgibbon Cup final. Last Saturday, in familiar surroundings of the SETU Waterford Arena, the Déise County star went for the more direct approach, clubbing the Galway students into submission with a four-goal haul in a surprisingly one-sided championship final.
Unlike UG, who were drawing almost exclusively from players from this county, there was a hugely cosmopolitan feel to the UL side, who had strong contributors from all over the Ireland – or the majority of the country’s hurling strongholds, at least, including Galway.
Bryan O’Mara anchored the defence and put in a captain’s performance; while his Tipperary colleague Gearóid O’Connor was a rock of consistency up front, scoring 0-9 in total, 0-8 from dead balls.
Dean Mason’s goalkeeping heroics were the reason UL edged past SETU Waterford in a tight semi-final but this time around it was his fellow Kilkenny man, Darragh Corcoran, alongside Cork’s Seán Twomey and Limerick’s Adam English and Colin Coughlan, that gave UL such a firm foothold in the middle third of the pitch.
